About this event

More courage for change! The conference „The New European Bauhaus – Werkstatt der Zukunft“ will bring together international experts in the context of Frankfurt Fashion Week to redefine the future of the European fashion and textile industry with focus on the Green Deal.

The conference is inspired by Ursula von der Leyen‘s initiative "The New European Bauhaus", which she first presented in her "State of the Union" speech in September 2020. By bringing the Green Deal to the people, „The New European Bauhaus“ is a creative and interdisciplinary movement, convening a space of encounter to recuperate and revisit sustainable practices, empower the most inspiring practices of today and design future ways of living, at the crossroads between art, culture, social inclusion, science, digitalisation and technology. The COVID crisis has shown that many topics are interlinked and that new thinking comes from breaking silos, just as the Bauhaus movement did one hundred years ago.

The negative impact of fashion and textile production on our environment is immense. The dyeing and finishing of textiles alone causes around 20 percent of global water pollution (source: EEA) and causes 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (source: EPRS). In order to initiate or accelerate processes of rethinking and change, Fashion Council Germany, as a partner of the “New European Bauhaus” movement of the European Union, invites international experts to identify and discuss new solutions. The conference sees itself as a platform for designers, politicians, teachers, retailers, textile manufacturers, artists and scientists who have a common goal, namely to combine good design, sustainability and inclusion.

In order to reach stakeholders in the industry across Europe, the conference will also unite the European Fashion Councils for the first time and formulate key points that politics, business and consumers will have to face.

The participants of the conference discuss and solve at the same time: Can sustainable fashion be trend-conscious? How can new technologies and innovations help us to get closer to this goal? How should educational pathways be designed to enable fashion professionals to contribute to the change? How do we manage to reach consumers and set trends? And how does the cooperation with other countries look like?
